Prospera CU makes huge cash donation to food bank

Released by Tashon Ziara, Prospera Credit Union, Abbotsford

Prospera Credit Union's Community and Public Relations Manager Erin Nesci and Web Services Manager Stacey Irwin (who is also a Rotary member) show off the Starfish Packs following the announcement that the credit union is donating $10,500 to the Abbotsford Foodbank's Starfish Pack Program.

he Abbotsford Foodbank’s Starfish Pack Program, which provides kids in need with a backpack filled with healthy, nutritious foods to take home at the end of each school week, continues to grow.

With the support of community partners and individual donors, what began as a pilot project in early 2013 funded by the Rotary Club of Abbotsford (with a single school and ten backpacks), has expanded into a full scale program that currently serves 213 children from 14 schools in Abbotsford.

At a special luncheon last week hosted by the Rotary Club of Abbotsford, Prospera Credit Union presented a cheque for $10,500, which will allow the program to expand even further.

“It’s hard for a child to learn and grow when they don’t have enough food to eat,” says Bruce Howell, President and CEO of Prospera Credit Union. “The Abbotsford Starfish Pack Program is making a real difference in the lives of local school children and we’re thrilled to be able to support them with a donation of $10,500, which will provide 20 students with a backpack filled with food every week.”

Joining together at the cheque presentation, L to R: Hugh Ellis, Abbotsford Rotary Club President; Dan Whalley, Prospera's Vice President of Branch Operations; Waheed Hirji, Prospera's Chief Financial Officer; Marv Neufeld, Prospera's Senior VP of Risk; and Dave Murray, Executive Director, Abbotsford Food Bank.

“Rotary Club of Abbotsford is extremely pleased that Prospera stepped up with a cheque for $10,500.00 to support the Food Bank with the Starfish Backpack Program,” says Rotary Club of Abbotsford President, Hugh Ellis. “This generous donation will provide 20 additional backpacks. Prospera is a Starfish Superstar!”
