Calling All Angels!
Youth Angel tree Project to put smiles on 100 Abbotsford kids this Christmas
Submitted by Erin Nesci, Prospera Credit Union
rowing up can be tough and there are many youth in our community who struggle to find their way through the teenage years and into adulthood. Facing the holidays when you’re feeling vulnerable or forgotten can sometimes feel like the last straw.
“Some of the young people we meet have been through a lot and for many of them the holidays can be a very stressful and depressing time,” says Simone Maassen, Manager of Youth Services for Abbotsford Community Services. “Knowing that there are caring, kind people willing to help someone they don’t even know gives them a sense of hope and that goes a long way to keeping them motivated and engaged in helping themselves.”
Letting youth know they are not alone—that there are people in the community who care—is the inspiration behind Prospera Credit Union’s Youth Angel Tree Project.
“This will be our third year running the Youth Angel Tree Project and this year we’ve expanded from one branch location to all three of our Abbotsford branches so we’re definitely going to need more angels to help us out,” says Brenda Monk, Prospera’s Regional Branch Manager. “We invite everyone to stop by and pick a name.”
With the names of more than 90 youth provided by Abbotsford Community Services, credit union staff have set up Angel Trees in all three branches with holiday wishes from youth printed on cards for Angels to take away. Angels are asked to bring the unwrapped gifts back to the branch by December 15 to ensure that all of the gifts are wrapped and delivered before the holidays.
“A lot of times what these kids are asking for isn’t what you’d expect,” says Monk. “They’re asking for a pair of shoes, some pajamas or a grocery store card to buy food, things that we pretty much take for granted and assume everyone can afford.”
