McLeod Rd. greenhouse operation able to continue despite fire
Released by Jeff Ullyot, City of Chwk FD
he City of Chilliwack Fire Department responded to a commercial greenhouse fire in the 9700 block of McCleod Road on Saturday, September 24, 2011 at approximately 0800 hours. Upon arrival of fire crews to the rural area, the mechanical boiler room supplying the heat to several greenhouses on the property, was fully involved.
Fire crews were able to knock the fire down quickly and avoid any damage to the greenhouses or flower stock. Damage is limited to the mechanical room and is considered to be extensive. The business will be able to continue operating over the weekend, due in part to the warm, humid weather.
The fire was spotted by the owner of the property after hearing popping sounds outside. Upon investigation she witnessed heavy black smoke coming from the mechanical room and contacted 9-1-1.
There was no one in the complex at the time of the fire. Power was subsequently disconnected to the business and home. The cause of the fire is under investigation by the City of Chilliwack Fire Department and the local BC Safety Authority and is not considered suspicious.
