Spirit of Community
Cornerstone Church Fun Day a kick-off for SPIN
t was all about community spirit for last Saturday for the Cornerstone Christian Reformed Church whose members held Community Fun Day at their location on McNaught Ave.
The 3rd annual event was hosted by the Dutch-based church's Outreach Ministry Team.
"It is an event for everyone in the community to come out for a morning of fun, entertainment and free food," said church Administrative Assistant Melissa Raap, in an e-mail to the Voice.
Community event coordinator, Henk Beute, told the voice on Saturday that "It's a community fun day here."
Buete said that although most of those there Saturday were church members the occasion was open to the public.
"The idea is for members to invite friends and neighbours and family to this event and make them familiar with our church here and at the same time have a fun day, free food, refreshments and all that," said Beute.
"It's also a kick-off for one of our programs called Single Parents In Need (SPIN) where we provide lunch and groceries to single moms in the community, strictly outside our church membership," said Beute.
"On average we have about 20-30 singles mothers coming in with their families and get a free lunch and a bag of groceries to take home, its the least we can do for our neighbours and the less fortunate than we are."
Cornerstone's S.P.I.N. Ministry (Single Parents In Need) is a program for single mothers and their children that takes place on the second Saturday of every month from September - June. Mothers and their children come for lunch and as the mom's enjoy an activity or speaker, the kids get to play games, do crafts, and just have fun!
