Chilliwack Connects

Low income networking event puts services where needed

Submitted

one day event in Chilliwack this fall will connect low income residents with services and professional care. On October 2, Chilliwack Connect aims to make easy, one-stop service connections, in an atmosphere of welcome, dignity and support.

"We know access to services is one of the many challenges preventing ourmarginalized residents from getting the support they need," said Chilliwack Connect Committee chair Stewart Mclean. "Our goal with Chilliwack Connect is to give our guests direct service on site, which will help people improve their quality of life and link them to lasting service connections."

Guests to this event will find coordinated government services, health care, outreach and advocacy services, employment counseling and assistance, on-site child care, haircuts, clothing and food. Some of the service providers include Ministry of Housing and Social Development, Fraser Health, Ann Davis Transition Society, Salvation Army, Mennonite Central Committee, Triangle Community Resources, Chilliwack Community Resources Society and StreetHope. The City of Chilliwack, Vancity and the United Way of the Fraser Valley are assisting with the event.

This event is not funded by government and we cannot do it alone. We are seeking donations of supplies and funds to cover the costs of food and minimal organizing expenses. Our wish list for donations includes: socks, underwear, winter clothing, adult and child size backpacks, work boots and shoes ( particularly men's shoes and boots in good condition) granola bars, water, feminine hygiene products, long-distance phone cards, grocery store and other gift cards.

We are also seeking donations of your valuable time. Volunteer shifts will be short- about 2 hours for the all day event. This event is the first of its kind in Chilliwack. Similar events have been held in Mission and Abbotsford and have garnered impressive community support and cooperation. Our goal is to attract 200 guests to the inaugural event in Chilliwack.

Donations can be dropped off at the Ann Davis from 8:30am until 4:30pm at 9046 Young Road until noon on September 27, 2010. Chilliwack Connect is on Saturday, October 2 at First Ave. Christian Assembly on 46510 First Avenue.
