Shoppers see red at Target opening

Target store staff welcome their first Shoppers at the new Cottonwood location on Wednesday. Below, Derrick Schween and his daughter Lauren were eager to do some early Christmas shopping.

n early 2011, Target announced they were opening a retail outlet in the old Zellers store at Cottonwood Mall. It caused quite a stir in the community.

On Wednesday, just about three years later, the Chilliwack store finally opened its doors and if one word were used to describe it, then that would be the term "anticlimactic."

That's because as far as store openings go in Chilliwack it was a lacklustre event.

Target opened six stores around the Lower Mainland simultaneously on Wednesday; Abbotsford Power Centre, Metrotown, Haney Place, Surrey Place and Landsdowne Centre in Richmond.

Inside, employees could be heard cheering and pumping each other up. But with just fifteen minutes before the big moment, the parking lot was empty and less than a dozen people stood in line. Even most media in town gave the store the cold shoulder.

Could it be that Chilliwack residents have been spoiled with all the big box store and mall openings over the past couple of years? Clearly Chilliwack shoppers were blasé about Target throwing open its doors.

“The final store openings for this year mark a major milestone in Target’s history,” said Tony Fisher, president, Target Canada in a release on Wednesday. “The goal for our Canadian expansion was to open 124 stores across all ten provinces in 2013, and we are proud to say that with the help of more than 20,000 Canadian team members nationwide, we have accomplished this unprecedented undertaking.”

Those standing in line at Target expecting complimentary gift cards like they got at other big box store openings in Chilliwack were setting themselves up for disappointment because only brochures with a discount coupon inside were handed out.

The Voice wasn't allowed to take photos inside the store, so we can't show you much, but we can tell you that there are groceries and coolers situated at the back wall.

Oh, by the way, do you like the colour red? Target is counting on it.
