new type of members-only grocery store, catering exclusively to low-income residents, is slated to open early in July. Membership cards will be given out free at over 80 agencies throughout the Fraser Valley, such as the Salvation Army, women's shelters, Native Centres and various community service agencies.

Kelly Fowler, Director of The Oasis Outreach Society (OOS), told The Voice yesterday in a phone call that he has found a great spot for the store next to the Paramount theatre in the old Ed's Bikes store at 46191 Yale Rd. Over the next month-and-a-half the store will be fitted with shelving and stocked with a variety of items from soup to cereal and household supplies.

Oasis Outreach Society promises to be a big asset to the community of Chilliwack, not only because of the cheaper food prices, but also for the assistance to people in other areas such as funds to help pay bills, a school breakfast program, a bed distribution program, free smart food shopping classes and money management program and a holiday food hamper program as well.

The cards will be distributed at the Salvation Army, women's shelters, Native Centres and various community agencies. The Voice will be publishing a list of where people can get the cards when that information comes available.

Oasis Mission Statement

"It's a shame in this rich country that we still have people that are hungry. We want to do our part to change that. We believe that can be accomplished through bringing about awareness that, first, hunger in Canada does exist and secondly, there is tremendous waste in the food industry. That's why we have our food rescue system in place. We collect excess food and redistribute it to the community groups that run meal programs, food hampers and community kitchens.
