n Saturday, at about 11 am, a drama unfolded on the Chilliwack River when two men overturned in their canoe.
One made it to shore and then to a phone where he called 9-1-1 reporting that his partner was missing after being carried away down river by the strong currents.
All available emergency first responders were scrambled to the scene. The Chilliwack Search and Rescue (SAR) raft team launched at Tamihi and began working their way down river.
RCMP members coordinated the rescue effort and searched areas accessible by vehicle. Just as Air One was in the process of getting their bird in the air to do a sweep of the river, the SAR team found the man on the riverbank in the vicinity of Sweltzer Creek at approximately 12:53 pm.
The man was conscious and breathing when found but was going into shock due to the length of time he spent in the water and sitting wet on the shore. Emergency Health Services was called and they met the SAR command unit who accompanied the waterlogged man out to Chilliwack Lake Rd.
If you're out on the water this year, be safe and be prepared. For information on safe boating see another recent item on the Voice here.
