Turning Over A Green Leaf
Volunteers needed for food waste recycling program at the events this year
Submitted by Kathy Funk, Exec Dir BIA
entral Community Park will host the award winning “Party in the Park” for the fifth year, starting on Friday, July 8, 2011 and will run each Friday night from 5:00-10:00 until August 26.
Kathy Funk, Executive Director of the BIA says, “due to the overwhelming support of corporate sponsorships, we are able this year to expand all areas of this great event.”A new partnership this year with the City of Chilliwack has been formed under the direction of Janet DeMarcke, Manager of Environmental Services and together we will run a trial organics (food scrapes) collection program at Party in the Park this season.
Further to the City of Chilliwack's already successful recycling program, they have chosen to introduce at this major event a new to Chilliwack organic collection system which will be showcased at Party in the Park. "We are looking to the people of Chilliwack to adopt this new initiative" says Funk. She said in order for this to be a success, we are looking for volunteers to work at the diversion stations. The volunteers will be trained by the City in how to educate the users on which place to put their organics and recycling.
Mandy Watts Program Coordinator for Continuing Studies UFV and the market manager says, “I am thrilled to be a part of this great program and am working with the food vendors to also embrace this greening idea". The plan is to encourage use of recycled utensils and plates by the vendors and to encourage customers with cup discounts for those using their own containers. "Most people are willing to do their part in going green and this is what makes this program so exciting."
The BIA is also going to sell "Party in the Park" travel mugs and have bulk water available free of charge to those who bring their own containers.
