he summer is fast approaching and the War Canoe racing season will soon begin. This year the Dan Milo Memorial Society will be hosting the Cultus Lake Water Sports at Main Beach on June 4th and 5th, 2011. This will be the 54th year of this traditional event. The Cultus Lake Water Sports Committee operates under the Dan Milo Memorial Society which is a non-profit society committed to cultural preservation.

The First Nations teams that participate in our event travel from all over the Lower Mainland, Vancouver Island, and Washington State to participate in this exciting event. Clubs begin training for the racing season in the cold months of March running, paddling and meeting. The sport promotes drug and alcohol free lifestyles, encourages active living, and ensures the continuation of canoeing culture of the Coast Salish people.

War Canoe racing is a drug and alcohol free sport and it rooted in the traditional form of transportation for the Coast Salish people. Historically, canoes provided a means for families and communities to travel long distances to gather food, fish, hunt, travel to gatherings and of course, war! The sport is now revered as an excellent discipline to learn good sportsmanship, traditional teachings and healthy lifestyles.

Another part of this event is our annual Miss Cultus Lake Princess pageant. Every year we invite girls, and young ladies, aged 3 to 18, from all First Nations communities, to be contestants in our pageant. The contestants will all be asked to do a short speech, show off a talent, and wear traditional regalia. We will have three categories: Tiny tot (3-5), Lil Miss (6-10), and Miss Cultus Lake (11-18). On Sunday June 5th, the judges will choose one contestant from each category to be crowned as the princess.

The Dan Milo Society and Cultus Lake Water Sports Committee would be pleased to invite you to attend our event as a representative of our community, if you would need any additional information please contact Cecilia Lockerby at 604-819-7582.
