Growth in Arts
Mary Main, CVAA
n April 6, The Chilliwack Visual Artist Association is pleased to open an exciting group exhibition at The O'Connor Group Gallery (9201 Corbould St, Chilliwack). The 2017 Fraser Valley Biennale is an impressive survey of some of the most exceptional works of art produced by artists in the Fraser Valley region over the past two years.
The Fraser Valley Biennale began in 2011 as a partnership between The Reach Gallery Museum Abbotsford and arts councils from around the region. The Biennale celebrates the artistic accomplishments of the region, expands the public's knowledge of the artists working locally, and nurtures the growth of the artist community in the Fraser Valley. Now in its fourth iteration, the Biennale has become an important vehicle for the promotion and presentation of the talented artists living in the region.
The format of the exhibition has transformed over the years and is now a guest-curated project that is presented in multiple locations over the course of the year. The first curated selection for the 2017 Biennale was shown at the Kariton Gallery in Abbotsford in January 2017. The second version of the exhibition, taking place at The O'Connor Gallery, will be a dynamic collection of works specifically chosen for the space.
The 2017 Biennale is curated by Beth Carruthers. Carruthers is a curator, consultant, theorist, artist, and researcher. She is internationally recognized as an expert in ecological art practice and theory, and for her research and practice in the area of Arts, Culture and Sustainability. Future versions of the Biennale will be presented at the Mission Arts Council during the month of August, and will round out the year at The Reach Gallery Museum from September through December.
Come out and join the dedicated team of volunteers from the Chilliwack Visual Artist Association as they open another extraordinary exhibition at the O'Connor Group Gallery. The Opening Reception takes place on April 8th from 1 to 3pm. and members of the public are welcome to join in the celebration of the artists presented in this noteworthy exhibit.
