'Community Café'

City giving residents chance to voice ideas June 5-6

Released by Jamie Leggatt, City of Chiliwack

he City of Chilliwack will be hosting two interactive Community Café events on June 5th and 6th to get residents talking about popular growth management topics including: planning for change in neighbourhoods, increasing residential densities the right way, regulating the colour and design of commercial development, providing local economic opportunities, and building a healthier community.

As part of the year-long Official Community Plan review project, these events will feature a presentation, discussion tables and live electronic polling to solicit valuable feedback that will affect decisions regarding how the community develops over the next 30 years.

"In order to protect prime valley floor agricultural land, Chilliwack's growth management strategy will continue to rely on infill redevelopment, densification, and hillside development. Every neighbourhood in our community will at some point in time experience an increase in density," said Mayor Sharon Gaetz. "This is a great opportunity for residents to inform themselves and take an active role in shaping our growth policies, before rezoning happens in their neighbourhood. I encourage each and every community member to participate in planning our community's future."

Initiated in fall 2012, the Official Community Plan review process entails a review of the 1998 Official Community Plan's directions and policies, consideration of where and how growth will be accommodated based on 30 year population projections, and incorporation of new policy to address emerging issues, including changing demographics, quality of life, affordable housing, healthy community strategies, sustainability, economic development, and environmental and geotechnical protection.

More information on the OCP review project and an online discussion forum can be accessed on PlaceSpeak at under the topic, "Chilliwack Official Community Plan."
