The Dragon Rub
9th Annual Dragonboat Fest July 20
Submitted by Scott Farrell, FVDBC/Voice file photo
Dragonboaters out on Harrison Lake in the fall of 2012.
e have purchased a new Outrigger Canoe (OC-6) in January and can now offer our paddling members the ability to paddle on Harrison Lake year round. The OC-6 is the same size (40 feet) as a dragon boat but only holds 6 paddlers.
The outrigger canoe races are also longer in lengthen and duration. It is not uncommon to see races to be 5, 10 or 15kms in lengthen. Its originals can be traced back to the Polynesians. The sport is very much a cultural and spiritual entity in Hawaii.
We had our annual Community Challenge in June with The City of Chilliwack taking top honours. It was a very low-key fun filled day.
Of course our 9th Annual Harrison Dragon Boat Regatta is fast approaching. We have officially sold out again.
We will be seeing 70 teams competing on the waters of Harrison Lake for prizes and notoriety. Teams from the Fraser Valley, Lower Mainland, Vancouver Island, the Interior as well as Washington State will be given 4 races each with the top three teams from each division winning medals for their hard work.
We will have some local entertainment and vendors to keep our paddling guests busy between races.
