Heritage Rail demo project in Cloverdale later in summer

Submitted by Myrtle Macdonald, Chilliwack

ome time ago you told us you want light passenger rail from Chilliwack to Surrey. Quite a lot of effort has gone into getting this accomplished.

Friends of Rail for the Valley was incorporated. At the third Annual General meeting on April 15, 2012, John Vissers of Abbotsford became the President and Rick Green of Langley Vice President.

Juanita Stander Recording Secretary, Myrtle Macdonald Membership Secretary, Graham Dalton Treasurer, Lal Sharma and Robbin Yager are from Chilliwack. Other Board members are Doug Ruggles of Abbotsford, Roy Mufford of Milner, Lee Lockwood of Langley, and Dr.John Buker now of Rosedale. He has returned from the Yukon, taken a teaching post at UFV, Abbotsford campus, and settled into farming with his wife and first born son.

He updates and adds articles about light rail to the newsletter If you dont receive this very interesting publication, click that web site and ask to be on the mailing list. Send you comments there and to me if you like. If you want less frequent mail or none at all, please let us know. Id like to know your views.

The Leewood Proposal by a highly experienced and respected British firm, expertly done for Rail for the Valley, was published In September 2010. It goes into all aspects of getting rail service functioning several times a day efficiently and at remarkably little cost to passengers and government, 99 km. from Scott Road Sky station (near Patullo Bridge) to Chilliwack. You can download the 87 pages from 99km will cost 1/3 as much as 11 km of of sky train.

We are delighted that the Fraser Valley Heritage Railway Society has been very active. The original Interurban Car 1125 (Chilliwack) and car 1304 have been totally restored and will be moved to Cloverdale at an opening of the restored railway station later this summer.

Our first priority is to get this Heritage Railway up and running as a demonstration project.

Surrey Council are planning for light rail and have purchased the Right of Way - from the the Sky Train Station to the Southern Rail line - and have declared the Southern Rail Line a light rail corridor.

We commit $164 million a year to TransLink, so its important those dollars flow south of the Fraser now, said Surrey Mayor Dianne Watts recently. Surrey Council have also been generous in funding building costs for the station at Cloverdale.

Graham plans to have a stand at the Berry Festival in Abbotsford on July 7 and 8 to promote light rail.

Graham and others will again have a tent at Party in the Park in Chilliwack Fridays 5 to 10PM July and August. Can you please volunteer to help us, committing yourself for certain hours on specific dates, such as 6 to 8 PM.

We have excellent posters, banners and info. E-mail me here or phone 604-795-6390. After seven rings the answering machine comes on.

Memberships of $10 and donations are all a help in advancing the cause.
