The Future is Open

FVRD wants your ideas at  their Open Houses starting July 17

Released by Sabrina Kasprzak, FVRD

he Fraser Valley Regional District (FVRD) invites you to share your ideas, concerns, and vision for the region’s future at an upcoming Open House.

The FVRD is conducting a review of the Regional Growth Strategy – a 30-year and beyond vision for the future of the region. Under provincial legislation, the FVRD is required to conduct periodic reviews of its Regional Growth Strategy. The current strategy, "Choices for our Future", was adopted in 2004 with support from all member municipalities.

The review process will update the current Regional Growth Strategy to reflect new legislation, current trends, opportunities and challenges brought about by rapid population growth. The FVRD is one of the fastest growing regional districts in British Columbia. By 2041, its population is expected to increase by as much as 60%, which will put significant pressure on the region.

Also, recent provincial mandates to reduce greenhouse gas emissions could potentially influence policies on air quality, transportation, and other significant issues in the Fraser Valley.

A total of six Open Houses will be held in the Fraser Canyon and throughout the Fraser Valley over the next few months, to give the public an opportunity to voice their ideas and share their concerns regarding the future of the region. The FVRD is looking for input on a broad range of topics including, the economy, housing, healthy living, transportation, and the environment.

"The Regional Growth Strategy helps to ensure that the region as a whole is working toward a common future. Our region is facing unprecedented growth; an updated plan provides a common foundation for managing this growth and preserving our environment, resources and quality of life", said Sharon Gaetz, Chair of the FVRD Board. "That’s why we need to hear from the public: What do you think the future should look like? What kind of future should we be working toward?"

The first three Open Houses will be held in Boston Bar, Hope, and Agassiz on the following dates:

  • Tuesday, July 17: Boston Bar (6:00 pm – 8:00 pm) Canyon Lanes Bowling Alley, 47585 Trans Canada Hwy, Boston Bar

  • Wednesday, July 25: Hope (6:30 pm - 8:30 pm) Hope Recreation Centre, 1005-6th Avenue, Hope

  • Thursday, July 26: Agassiz (6:00 pm - 8:00 pm) Centennial Centre, District of Kent Municipal Hall, 7170 Cheam Avenue, Agassiz

An additional three Open Houses will be held in Chilliwack, Mission, and Abbotsford in early fall. (Dates to be announced). Please join us - your ideas can shape the future!
