Avoid Food Related Illnesses
Clean, heat, ice and cover this summer season says Fraser Health

ummer has officially arrived and that means time for barbecues, picnics or any other excuse to enjoy the weather and eat outside.
As you fire up the grill or lay out the picnic blanket, Fraser Health has a few helpful tips to ensure food safety this summer season. Don’t let food poisoning ruin good times with family and friends. It’s as easy as staying C.H.I.C. to staying healthy:
1. Clean it – clean and sanitize all surfaces as well as cooking and eating utensils, especially after coming in contact with raw meat.
2. Heat it – kill harmful bacteria that can cause food-borne illnesses when grilling by cooking meat and poultry to safe internal temperatures (at least 71° C or 160° F). When in doubt, use a probe thermometer.
3. Ice it – keep cold refrigerated foods like luncheon meats, pasta salads or other perishable foods in an insulated cooler packed with lots of ice or several ice packs.
4. Cover it – store leftovers in separate, shallow, covered containers in the refrigerator and eat
within two days.
“How we clean and prepare food is only one element of proper food safety. The other very important component is hand hygiene,” says Inderjeet Gill, Manager of Environmental Health Services at Fraser Health. “Proper hand washing not only protects you from food poisoning, but can also prevent many common illnesses such as colds and sore throats.”
