owntown Chilliwack BIA Executive Director Kathy Funk and events planner Desmond Devnich appeared on 98.3 Star FM Wednesday to chat with morning show personalities Scott Riley and Lisa Stevens about the first Party in the Park and the Guinness World Record for peeling corn set to happen Friday night.

If you missed it the morning show, the following are highlights of their chat.

Last year the big name act to open Party ala Park was Bill Henderson. This year, it's Mission BC's Juno award-winning Fabre Drive with hit songs like You and I Tonight and When I'm With You.

What's New This Year

Funk thanked Coast Capital and the City of Chilliwack for sponsoring the eight events that will be held at Central Community Park at Victoria Ave and Young Rd until the end of August.

Chilliwack's mononymous award-winning singer Kat, will also be giving a performance as well as young Brook Harris.

But first, there's a world corn shucking record that needs to be set. Organizers want to get their names engraved into the Guinness Book of World Records right alongside other weirdness like snake charmers and fingernail growers.

The current world record for corn shucking was set last year with about 350 peeling back ears at Knotsberry Farm.

Event organizers in Chilliwack want to have at least 1000 people signed up and ready to shuck. One of the record book protocols the people have to be in a separate area and in this case behind a fence and another prerequisite is a sound recording of the corn being shucked needs to be made.

"The corn shucking will be a highlight for most people that come and I think its exciting that we can all be part of that," Funk says.

Over 70 vendors will be selling at the Royal Lepage Marketplace

"This year, what's new is that we're setting it up at Wellington and Mill St., and our businesses have said that they're going to stay open, put up some sidewalk sale things," said Funk. "Another new addition is Sears Home Services has sponsored a food fair where you can go get your food, have a seat and we have a great big screen with a live feed from the stage."

Safeway and Primesigns Family Fun Zone will have lots of things to do to keep the kids busy for hours.

"One of my favourite places at Party in the Park is the Family Fun Zone and of course we have so many activities for the kids this year with crafting, clowning around, gardening and the famous face painting with Carolyn," Devinich says.

"New this year is Chilliwack Healthcare Foundation is sponsoring a new tent to promote well-being and health for the whole entire family, it's called Just For The Health of It."

"Come and enter for that vacation to Disney, thanks to Gentebella, we're going to have another opportunity for a family of four to win that great trip and Gentebella will be there doing some little mini makeovers."

At 4 P.M. the market opens then at 5 P.M. the Family Fun Zone. The corn shucking event happens at 6 P.M.

Organizers of the corn husking event are asking people to show up at around 5 P.M. to pre-register.

Star Fm plans on dishing out cake tonight too. Happy 85th Birthday to 98.3 Star Fm and the great people who work there.
