Party To Recycling

City takes composting program to Party in the Park this summer and says volunteers are still needed

Released by Starlee Renton, City of Chilliwack

arty in the Park is getting greener this year with a food scrap composting program, the first of its kind at a public event in Chilliwack! Waste diversion stations will be positioned throughout the park for each event to encourage recycling. Volunteers will be on hand to help you divert the organic materials from the trash.

"Chilliwack's favourite family friendly event, is becoming eco friendly as well," said Mayor Sharon Gaetz. "Look for the Green Diversion Stations around the event and help keep Party in the Park, clean and green."

About 30 percent of the waste in the Bailey Landfill is food waste. Composting these materials helps Chilliwack be more sustainable by diverting waste, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and also producing a valuable resource.

Volunteers are still needed! This is a great opportunity for your group or business to get involved in one of the most well attended events in our community. Groups and businesses who have already signed on to help Chilliwack lead the way in sustainability include: Chilliwack People First - Chilliwack Society for Community Living, Real Canadian Superstore, CUPE 458, Best Western Green Footprints, Chilliwack Field Naturalists Club, TCS Scout Group, Chilliwack Kiwanis Club, Chilliwack Chiefs, Chilliwack Huskers and many individual volunteers. Volunteers would be required to direct attendees to put food scraps, recyclables, drink containers and garbage into the appropriate containers.
