One Injured In House Fire

"Hardy Board" saves neighbouring homes during Daniel Drive Fire.

Released by Kathy Lanes, Chwk Fire Dept.

n Tuesday, July 5, 2011at 4:46 PM crews from Fire Halls 1, 4 and 6 responded to reports of a house fire in the 46000 block of Daniel Drive on Promontory Heights. Firefighters arrived to a single family home with the second floor fully involved in fire and threatening the neighboring homes.

The house was unoccupied when crews arrived. In spite of persistent winds from the west and heavy fire conditions, firefighters managed to knock down the fire quickly. Neighbours, including some off-duty firefighters, helped the first responding crew pull fire hose off the truck and Chilliwack firefighters utilized master stream hose lines to suppress the second floor fire. Approximately 26 Chilliwack firefighters responded to the call.

The house sustained heavy fire damage and a neighboring home sustained some heat damage but no fire damage.

One of the two occupants of the house suffered minor burns and was treated at Chilliwack General Hospital. No firefighters were injured in the course of the fire.

The cause of the fire is yet to be determined and is under investigation by the Chilliwack Fire Department and the RCMP.

Fire officials noted that fire spreading to neighboring buildings was averted in large part to the prevalent use of “Hardy-Board” as an exterior cover to the structures, a material which is extremely resistant to heat.
