Fraser Valley Fundraiser
Thunder Rally effort hoping to raise $10,000 for cancer research
he 3rd annual Fraser Valley Thunder Rally for the Cure in support of the Canadian Cancer Society. The Rally is an opportunity for individuals of all ages to come together and support the Canadian Cancer Society in their fight against this disease that affects so many.
The rally starts in Vancouver at the Canadian Cancer Society's head office on Gravely at Boundary. Then makes it's way through the Fraser Valley ending at the Vedder River Campground.
Rally organizer, Mike Ryan, was on 98.3 StarFm promoting the event and the following are highlights from that conversation.
This is our third annual year. We are going to continue well into the future. All our money raised goes to the Canadian Cancer Society. We keep no money for ourselves. It all goes to the Society
The first year was in Kamloops and we raised approximately $10,000 for the Society. Our second year we moved it down the Vedder River and I think we've found a home at Vedder River Campground. It's a great location and people love it.
We raise money from the registration which is $25- single, $40-couple, $50-carload. Children under 15 free when with an adult.
We've had different fundraiser events. We've had dances and pub nights and we have children out collecting pop bottles and kool-aid stands. You name it, we're hitting up the community and the corporate community that's come through fantastic for us.
The rally is open to all vehicles. On our rally we're being led off Earl Tucker, who's well known in the car world and antique cars. It's going to be led off by the cars and then the motorcycles.
After Vancouver, we're coming up Lougheed Hwy. out through Mission. We have a pit stop at approximately 11:15-11:30 at the Mission Junction Mall. Anyone who lives in the Valley that would rather join up there rather than come to Vancouver that's fine. From there we cut across to Abbotsford and down to Sumas border crossing and then farm roads into Vedder. It's going to be a great time.
The gates open up at noon at Vedder River campground for anyone that wants to come directly to the campground.
It's very much a family event. We have dunk tanks and bouncy castles and just a million things lined up for the children to do.
The main thing that we do with the children is we have "So you want to be a child rock star". We have costumes and the children bring us songs that they could sing-a-long with. We had children last year as young as 3-years-old get up on stage and sing and dance and its just a great time for the kids and its a great time for the adults.
From 4pm right through to 1am we have back-to-back bands. We'll be starting off with James Sheppard and the Bare Bones, Somex6, Fullmoon (Doug and the Slugs) and Rhythm Street. This is Rhythm Streets third year there. They're all four fantastic bands.
There will also be a BBQ, silent auction, door prizes which include a $500 voucher from Flight Centre.
The best way to pre-register is at their website: www.fraservalleythunder.org or you can register the day of the rally. The cost is; adults $25, family $40, full car: $50 and children under 15 free if accompanied by adult. The registration fee includes camping until the site is full. Cash only please.
