Crime Statistics

Most crime in the city is down from 2003 numbers

Staff/Voice

he city is becoming a safer place to live. Criminal offences and violent crimes are gradually declining from previous highs in 2003. B&E's and property crimes are also on the wane and car thefts have decreased by 50%. Even though vandalism and thefts from cars remain the same, Chilliwack is a slightly more livable city.

Municipal coffers are going to fatten by $27,148 in incremental traffic fine revenue this year. The money will be used for incremental policing and support costs. Without funding from fines, the city would have to increase property taxes or reduce the level of services. Take your pick.

Between 2009-2010 the city will have hired three more RCMP members at $369,000, three support staff at $177,000 and paid the PRIME fee at $48,000.

In 2008, the city received $975,632 for public safety to help pay for things such as policing and court costs.

According to a city hall report, "The return of 100% of traffic fine revenues to municipalities has shown a strong level of support for public safety in the Province of British Columbia and has made a significant difference in the level policing services that are now affordable."

In 2009, the city issued 435 bylaw tickets. Of those, 164 were paid without dispute and 51 were disputed. To date Chilliwack has 180 fines that have not been paid and have been forwarded to a collection agency. The city collected $72,676 for bylaw fines and $53,360.65 is still outstanding.

The number of bylaw tickets issued in 2009 decreased by 11% from 2008:

2009 - 435 issued tickets

2008 - 396 issued tickets

2007 - 766 issued tickets

The number of disputed bylaw tickets in 2009 increased by 13% from 2008:

2009 - 68 disputed tickets

2008 - 51 disputed tickets

2007 - 191 disputed tickets
