School District on track for French Immersion with class size, budget

Released by Chilliwack School District 33

hilliwack School District #33 will be offering Early French Immersion for its students, beginning in fall 2014.

Application for the program closed on Friday, January 24 at 4:00 p.m. The final number of students having applied to enter the new program in Kindergarten is 42 and for grade 1 is 24.

These numbers will translate into 2 full kindergarten classes and one full grade one class according to the BC School Act 76.1.

The Superintendent is enthusiastic that the new district Early French Immersion has garnered significant interest by parents in the Chilliwack School District.

Initially, plans were to begin with one class of Kindergarten and one class of grade one for Early French Immersion, if the numbers warranted a class at each of these grade levels. With the numbers exceeding initial expectations, and aligning with the BC School Act regarding class size, there is no need for the district to conduct a lottery for student selection in the district program.

The Superintendent is planning on building into the 2014/2015 district staffing and budget plan, two district Early French Immersion classrooms for kindergarten and one district Early French Immersion classroom for grade one.

Planning is underway with the Cheam school administration and Director of Facilities to determine the needs at the school regarding classroom spaces.

Walt Krahn, Board of Education Chairperson noted, “The Board is delighted that the parental interest in Chilliwack School District has confirmed strong support in this early stage of our program development. The Board is pleased that as a district we are able to provide an additional program that will enhance and support student learning and parental choice.”
