Trans Canada Traffic Troubles

Inclement weather, accidents and Fraser Valley rockslide cause chaos on Hwy. 1 at weekend start Staff/Voice photos

Containment booms are setup Friday morning around a semi loaded with laundry detergent lying on it's side west of the Vedder Canal.

otorists travelling east on the Trans Canada early this morning faced several challenges beginning with an accident at the No. 3 Rd. exit where a red 2-door car slammed into the back of a black pickup truck. The car suffered major front end damage.

Once drivers negotiated that, traffic again ground to a halt just west of the Vedder Canal overpass where a westbound semi went off the road landing on it's side in the grassed centre median. The truck was carrying laundry soap and did not appear to be leaking when the photos were taken.

The accident happened just after 2am and RCMP Traffic Div. hadn't returned the Voice's call by press time and so we are unable to report on the condition of the drivers.

Then motorists were faced with an obstacle and had to detour around a rockslide that saw a 37-kilometre section of the eastbound lanes closed on Highway 1 between Rosedale and Hope.

Freezing rain made driving treacherous in the Fraser Canyon and on Highway 5 into Merit which has compact snow with slippery sections and also saw a road closure today.
