No More Time Outs For "At Risk Seniors"

CDSRS ends program due to lack of funding

hilliwack & District Senior Resources Society with a membership of over 1,000 individuals is a nonprofit society based in Chilliwack BC, providing a wide variety of services and support to seniors.

In a press release last week, Al Hunt, Director of the Chilliwack and District Seniors Resource Society, said the Time Out program for "seniors at risk" operating for 18-years, has been deep-sixed due to a lack of funding.

"While costs increased the funding remained virtually the same until it was stopped in September of 2009. At that time the funding covered slightly more than 50% of the actual cost. "

"In spite of the best efforts of the Chilliwack & District Senior Resources Society we have been unable to replace the more than $70,000 in funding that was lost in 2009. As a result of the continuing costs of operation the Society is unable to continue with the Time Out Program. The participants in the program have all been notified of the program closure," said Hunt the release.

When funding in August 2009 was drying up, Hunt told the Voice then that "The Time Out program is the only program at risk. If we are unable to develop an alternate funding stream in very short order, the Time Out Program, as we know it will cease to exist. The transportation service is a separate entity within the Society, of course if there is no Time Out Program, there would be no need to transport that group of Seniors. There are many other facets to the transportation system that are in place and growing, no matter what happens to the Time Out program."

"The Chilliwack & District Senior Resources Society will continue to function and provide the core services the Seniors of Chilliwack have come to rely upon from us. While the Time Out Program has closed, we will continue to do our very best to make a positive difference in the lives of Seniors in Chilliwack," said Hunt.
