Drawing the Line on Violence

Big cash prizes offered in student art contest — deadline March 1

Released by Jennifer Woodroff for MLA Gwen O'Mahony

he Community Office of MLA Gwen O’Mahony and the Chilliwack Chapter of Soroptimist International are inviting all students from local Middle and Senior High Schools to participate in a contest on the theme of Standing Together:  A new generation united against violence.

“We know there is a vast pool of young talent in the communities of the eastern Fraser Valley and we want to feature it as part of our upcoming International Women’s Day event, on March 08.” said Gwen O’Mahony, MLA for Chilliwack-Hope.

Anita Rogers, President of the Chilliwack Chapter of Soroptimist International agreed, saying “This is an exciting opportunity for area students to have their voices heard on the pressing subject of violence in our communities.  We are proud to partner with the Community Office in providing a unique forum to area youth to have their talents showcased on International Women’s Day, while adding their voices to a rising chorus of men, women and youth standing together to stem to the tide of violence”.

Students are invited to submit entries in print, video or Power Point formats no later than Friday, March 01, at 5 pm.  First prize in the competition is $1,000, with a second prize of $500 and a third prize of $250.  Entries will be judged by a panel drawn from local media experts.

“We’re asking students to share their talent with the community by presenting their visions of how violence impacts them”, explained O’Mahony.  “As members of our community and the future of our society, it’s important that youth be heard on this increasingly urgent subject.”

Anita Rogers added “Fresh voices need to come to this discussion to infuse it with hope and to add a new generation’s perspective on creating a less violent world”.

All entries will be displayed at the March 08 International Women’s Day event, to be held at St. Thomas Anglican Church Ministry Centre, at 46048 Gore Avenue, in Chilliwack, from 1 pm to 4 pm.  More details on the event itself will be released shortly.
