t came as a surprise to Chilliwack Mayor Sharon Gaetz, but not to anyone else, when councillor Chuck Stam presented his boss with one of the final Queen's Jubilee medals to be given out in the city at the regular council session last Tuesday.

Last year, 60,000 commemorative medals were created to mark the 2012 celebrations of the 60th Anniversary of her majesty Queen Elizabeth II succession to the throne as Queen of Canada. The medal program is part of the Jubilee Year Celebrations organized by the government of Canada from the governor general's office.

Throughout January, local politicians have been busy presenting the medals that honours nominees for making significant contributions to the community.

"Something we don't do often enough, is to pause and celebrate the milestones and personal achievements of those who rise to the call of duty, and have made significant contributions to community, province and country," said Stam during the presentation.

He read Gaetz's nomination letter from the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (see below) then gave her the medal and a bouquet of flowers.

She said there are many people in the community who merit the medals but weren't nominated.

"I accept this on behalf of all of the council and staff that work here so hard, and also on behalf of all of the people that are in this city that are the unsung heroes who don't necessarily get an award, but they're every bit as deserving."

The FCM knows how much she contributes on that level, but it's people in the community who see how much work Gaetz really does. In fact, she is so busy, even her secretary needs a secretary.

Now, the Gaetz's have a matching set of his and hers medals they can wear with pride after her husband Jim, who volunteers with the Hospice Society at the Chilliwack General Hospital, received 1 of 30 that MP Mark Strahl presented two weeks ago at the Chilliwack Cultural Centre.

On Thursday, MLA Gwen O'Mahony will be presenting 4 medals at the Coast Hotel at 5pm. The public is invited for a chance to meet some of the award recipients.
