No Losers in Battle of Badges

Hockey game raises $5K and counting

Released by Cpl Tammy Hollingsworth, Chwk RCMP UFVRD

n February 9, 2013, at the Hope Arena the RCMP took on the firefighters for the annual Battle of the Badges hockey game. This event was organized to raise funds to support the fight against cancer with all proceeds going to Cops For Cancer.

A team of police officers played against a team of firefighters in an effort to raise funds for the region's Cops For Cancer volunteer cyclist who is required to raise a minimum of $5000 to qualify for the Tour de'Valley. Both teams were composed of local police and firefighters with the help of the outlying areas. The District of Hope's Chief Administrative Officer played goal for the Firefighters once again this year.

The event has been very successful in the past and always receives tremendous support from the area citizens and local businesses. The event was organized by Constable Francois Lewis and volunteer fireman George Johnston, who is also a retired RCMP member.

They worked hard to ensure there was corporate support and enough players to entertain the estimated 200 person crowd. The two teams have both had their turns winning the prestigious trophy, however, this year it was won by the firefighters. The score was neck and neck throughout the entire game and at the end of the third period it was tied 8-8. The game went into overtime and the firefighters ended up with the winning goal.

The event has raised over $2500 so far and they are still counting. "The hockey game was a lot of fun and very exciting to watch," says Corporal Tammy Hollingsworth. "It was great to see the community come together and raise money for such a great cause. We would like to send out a very big thank-you to the Hope community for their support."
