A Clever Comedy
Gibbs brings witty British humor to the Chilliwack stage Feb 16
Released by Melissa Mark, CAC
herlock Holmes fans brace yourselves for the cleverly written and executed theatrical comedy Antoine Feval. Chris Gibbs delivers a deliciously funny performance on the Main Stage at the Chilliwack Cultural Centre on February 16 at 8:00pm.
Presented by The Chilliwack Arts and Cultural Centre Society, this "shaggy dog" style of comedic theatre introduces us to Victorian England’s most overlooked detective Antoine Feval, as told by his "Watson" like side-kick Barnaby Gibbs. With a show that delights from beginning to end, Gibbs will have the audience howling as he charms with his witty British humor in his brilliant comical performance.
CBC proclaims "Gibbs' performance as the witless and self-deprecating Barnaby is near flawless. His martini-dry wit is characteristically sharp, in both script and performance, and his comic timing is beautiful."
Set in 1896 England, the daft side-kick Gibbs stumbles upon a thief while checking in on a friend’s empty house. Oddly enough the man is writing a poem about sapphires while holding a bag full of stolen goods. Gibbs is told by the thieving stranger that he is actually the famous detective Antoine Feval investigating the crime. Not clueing in that his new partner is in fact the master thief known as the Rhyming Bandit, they forges a new crime-fighting duo and the adventures begin.
Written in a way that manages to be both ridiculous and intelligent, Chris Gibbs has created a masterpiece in Antoine Feval. Performed in the "Shaggy dog" style which generally features an extensive narration of typically irrelevant incidents, usually resulting in a pointless or absurd punch line, Gibbs engrosses us with the mishaps that ensue. This comedic style plays upon the audience's preconceptions of the art of joke telling in an extremely entertaining and clever way. With his effortlessly natural stand-up and improv skills, combined with a charming irreverence for the ‘rules’ of theatre, this tour de force play unfolds at an exhilarating pace, delivering a magnificently amusing performance sure to have the audience in hysterics.
"Absolutely priceless… Sherlock fans will be in heaven." says the Edmonton Journal.
Chris Gibbs began his career in 1991 as a street performer in London and evolved into a touring stand-up comedian and improviser. With five hit award-winning shows that he has written and performed, this multi-talented comedian has been seen as a regular guest on NBC’s comedy series ‘Howie Do It’, played at Just For Laughs and the Winnipeg Comedy Festivals, starred in the Canadian indie feature ‘Run Robot Run,’ and is a published author. Chris also performs with the Canadian Comedy Award-winning improv troupe, The Carnegie Hall Show, every Wednesday with The National Theatre of the World.
This off-the-cuff comedian, Gibbs, made Canada his permanent home in 2002 and started touring with his one-man stand-up show, Gibberish. Inspiring a self-help book entitled ‘The Power of Ignorance: 14 Steps To Using Your Ignorance’ that he co-authored, with his one-man show ‘The Power of Ignorance’ he then began branching out even further from straight stand-up routine, writing and performing with this brilliantly clever, Antoine Feval.
"Anyone who has witnessed the self-deprecating comedic stylings of Chris Gibbs will agree: he’s one of the funniest guys around." National Post.
Antoine Feval premiered at the 2005 Winnipeg Fringe Festival thrilling audiences and selling out every seat available for the whole run, winning Best of Fest. Winning multiple awards including Best Comedy at the Montreal Fringe, Just For Laughs BEST COMEDY Award, winner at the Montreal Fringe, and selling out at the Toronto
Fringe, the show has gone international with performances in New Zealand, Canada and the United States.
