Symposium to look at local immigrant services
Submitted by April Neave, Chilliwack Community Services
variety of different community organizations will come together on February 22, 2012 at the Chilliwack Cultural Centre to talk about services for immigrants in the city.
In a joint effort to bring attention to the changing face of the community, Chilliwack Community Services and the School District have invited participants from a cross section of local institutions and service providers to look at the current services being provided, how to improve them and explore what is missing.
The day will consist of a panel of immigrants telling their personal stories followed by round table discussions by providers. The organizers want participants to leave the event more aware of the challenges and needs of immigrants, more informed about existing resources, services and expertise and more prepared to work together to achieve better outcomes for newcomers.
Moreover, the goal is to end the day with working groups committed to taking action on measures that will result in more positive experiences and opportunities for engagement and participation in the community by immigrants.
Ultimately, the organizers believe that as a whole the city will benefit by being welcoming and accessible to all. This symposium will be a venue for open dialogue and assessment on current practices as well exploration of best practices.
The Immigrant Symposium is made possible by the Settlement Workers in Schools Partnership Fund through the Ministry of Jobs, Tourism and Innovation. Chilliwack Community Services is contracted by the School District to provide Settlement Workers in Schools services to newcomer students and their families.
