Our Resident Witch

Welcoming a New Age

The Mayan calendar signals the end is nigh, but is it?

Submitted by Sorcha Kincaid, Wiccan High Priestess, Chilliwack

he holidays are a stressful time of year, but this year seems to be especially stressful.

The countdown clock is ticking and there are presents to wrap, turkeys to cook, and kids to entertain in every room of the house.

Somehow, the mom population of the country makes it all work. Yet, there is the nagging thought, is this my last one?

The Mayan calendar is to blame for that nagging doubt. The countdown is on and according to a large piece of carved stone, the world will be coming to a Grande Finale on the 21st of December of this year. There are a lot of different ways to take this information though, just as there are multiple ways to interpret a sentence and it's meaning.

Did we do our math right and have the accurate date? Did we translate it correctly? Perhaps the great change the Mayans spoke of is from one age to another. This could be a positive change from our self destructive ways to a more balanced life with our planet. A change of course is definitely needed if we are going to survive as a species.

Perhaps we will experience a cataclysmic phenomena (I doubt it, but stranger things have happened), or a shift in consciousness across the world, or maybe nothing will happen at all. All I know is that if we keep the peace, love, and joy that IS the holiday spirit close to our hearts, there's nothing the human race can't overcome.

Blessed Yule and may you be happy, healthy, safe, and slightly inebriated this holiday season.
