Clerk bear-sprayed during grocery store robbery

Double trouble. A clerk cleans the mace from his eyes after the store he was working at was robbed at gunpoint Monday.

t was double trouble for the police who quickly swarmed the area around Broadway Market on First Ave. just after 8 P.M. Monday evening following an armed robbery there.

Like something out of a Boondock Saints movie, witnesses said two males dressed all in black, with black face masks, toting hand guns and tasers, bear-sprayed the clerk in the face and then ordered him and others to the floor, at which point they emptied the till and fled on foot.

Mounties called in a K9 unit which tried to pick up a track, but may have been hampered by an abundance of foot traffic in the area at the time.

Police assisted the clerk who apparently had so much bear spray in his shirt, that he had to remove it. When paramedics arrived, the clerk was taken to Chilliwack General Hospital.

One of the most stunning things about this crime is that there were two robbers in the store at the same time. Hopefully this won't become a worrisome trend.

If you have any information regarding this crime, contact the Chilliwack RCMP at 604-792-4611 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477(TIPS).
