n estimated 300 people showed up at the Coast Chilliwack Hotel for a breakfast event on December 5th from 7 am and 10 am to raise funds for the Chilliwack Hospital and Health Care Foundation (CHHCF).

Co-sponsored by 89.5 The Hawk radio station, Trevor McDonald hosted the lineup of live entertainment and a keynote address by Glenda Standeven, a cancer survivor and co-author of ‘Choosing to Smile.’ Organizers were thrilled to announce that the event generated close to $17,000.00 in donations!

CHHCF Director of Community Relations, Donna Dixson, says proceeds from the event will help fund a new health program in Chilliwack schools and it turned out to be a grand affair.

“We were so pleased that so many people and businesses offered to help which ensured that it was spectacular. Champagne Dreams, Minter Gardens, Ken‘s Tire and Wheel and Techni-Gro Greenhouses Inc. contributed to the décor; Ernie Britton & THE BLENDURZ and Desmond Devnich were entertaining; Glenda Standeven was the keynote speaker; there were great door prizes, a fabulous healthy breakfast, and we made the Grand Prize draws in the Spot the Veloster contest,” says Dixson.

Two significant donations were gratefully acknowledged at the event. Canada Lands Company will write a cheque for 5000.00 and Cynthia Admiral and Steve Lerigny from the Chilliwack & District Real Estate Board were there to hand over a cheque for 4700.00, raised at their RealtorCare Community Fair held in October.

The Chilliwack School District was well represented with Superintendent Evelyn Novak, Vice Superintendent Rohan Arul, Board Chair Louise Piper and Trustee Walt Krahn in attendance. Chair Louise Piper brought whole hearted endorsement from the School Board for the Healthy Kids Initiative and talked about the recent commitment for 15,000.00 in partnership funding to support CHHCF’s efforts in improving the health of Chilliwack children. Ken Becotte, Executive Director of the Chilliwack Division of Family Practice also said a few words about how excited they are to be providing funding and support to this worthwhile initiative.

“This event was our first fundraiser and an opportunity to share with the community that we are a local foundation dedicated to working with other health care stakeholders to find solutions to our very unique health challenges. We officially launched our organization in May of this year and through intense community consultation have identified that our four areas of focus are Hospital Initiatives, Seniors, Community Health and Children and Youth. We are committed to the making a difference in the health of our region by working together with our partners. It is exciting to see how many people came out to show their support and contribute their money to helping us do this important work and we are especially grateful to the Chilliwack Coast Hotel for their generous contribution to making it all happen!” said Donna Dixson.

CHHCF’s mandate focuses on health promotion and the prevention of illness. Their Basic Training Campaign, launched in May, provides education and encouragement for individuals to Eat, Sleep, and Get Going, and to contribute to the Foundation to ensure that everyone in the community has the opportunity to eat nutritious food, get a good night’s sleep, and be physically and socially active.
