Maple Avenue Mattress Fire

Sleeping woman barely escapes

Released by Kathy Laynes for Jeff Ullyot, City of Chilliwack Fire Department

he City of Chilliwack Fire Department responded to a mattress fire in a home in the 46000 block of Maple Avenue on Wednesday, December 28, 2011 at approximately 0640 hours. The fire was contained and has consumed the contents of a 2nd floor bedroom in the 2200 square foot home. Damage to the remainder of the house was limited to light smoke damage. This was due to the bedroom door being closed when the tenants exited the building, containing the fire to the room of origin. Working smoke alarms also activated during the fire.

Three occupants were in the home when the fire broke out including a 46 year old female who was asleep in the fire bedroom.   She attempted to fight the fire but was not successful and managed to escape unharmed.   Two other younger occupants, sleeping in the basement, also escaped, with minor burns to their feet caused when they walked through some burning debris while trying to suppress the fire with an extinguisher.  They were forced out of the home by the heavy smoke and treated on scene by BC Ambulance attendants.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the City of Chilliwack Fire Department and is not considered to be suspicious.     There were no firefighter injuries.
