A Smiles Takes A Moment Yet Lasts Forever

ulie Houlker (on the right in the above photo) is one of the co-authors of an inspirational book called, Choosing to Smile.

The book tells the true stories of three friends who grew up as baby boomers and who all happened to get cancer. Recently, Julie entered the Cascade Hospice Centre in Chilliwack to live out her final days but she still has one important goal she wants to reach. She wants to live long enough to see the book that tells her story, and those of her friends, become a best-seller.

In less than one year since the self-published book came out, Choosing to Smile has sold over 1500 copies. Five thousand sold copies is what it takes to qualify as a Canadian best-seller.

When a group of women from the Valley Women's Network (VWN) heard of Julie’s wish, they decided to step in and do what they could to make her 'bucket list' dream come true. On Thursday, December 30th there will be a head-shaving event scheduled at Undine's Hair Studio at 15-8635 Young Road in Chilliwack at 5:00pm. Everyone is invited to attend and Chilliwack's Mayor Sharon Gaetz will be in attendance to speak on behalf of the mission.

An account has also been opened at Envision Credit Union to collect donations to purchase copies of the book to give to cancer patients year-round. Donations to provide books to cancer patients will be an ongoing project even after the Head-shaving awareness event. If you would like to make a donation to the Choosing to Smile Book Fund, visit any branch of the Envision Credit Union and make a deposit to account #1455864.

Individuals or corporations interested in making larger donation and who require a charitable tax receipt may send a cheque payable to: New Page Human Service Society - PO Box 998, Hope, B.C., V0X 1L0. Please designate donations for the 'Choosing to Smile Book Fund'.

The books are also available for purchase in Pages Bookstore in Hope. If you would like to read Julie's blog visit www.choosingtosmile.com  For more information about how you can donate or make Julie's wish come true contact Joyce Esau at 604-795-5375 or 604-858-2409.
