Take This Job and Shovel It

The dirt on Volunteering

Tashon Ziara, PCU

ccountability, focus, teamwork, integrity, passion, member-first, and community – these co-operative values are at the heart of Prospera Credit Union, and over the past year, Prospera has been able to amplify these values to positively impact BC’s communities as a founding community partner of Volinspire. These efforts have been recognized on a national level with a $10,000 Concentra Empowering Your Community award.

Volinspire, dubbed the Facebook of volunteering, is a community engagement platform that allows volunteers to create an online profile, follow organizations that are important to them and find opportunities that allow them to contribute to their community. Born from a passion for community, Volinspire uses technology to connect individuals and identify local businesses that share the same values.

Volinspire has had 750,000 volunteer hours logged on the platform, and over 4,750 organizations have been positively impacted. Of those numbers, Prospera has contributed more than 8,500 volunteer hours, which impacted over 200 non-profit organizations across British Columbia since partnering with Volinspire.

We are one of those companies where contributing to our community is foundational,” said Angela Burnell, Regional Director, Family Banking & Wealth Management in the Okanagan where Volinspire originated. “We talk about it when we hire, we talk about it meetings, we even talk about it on our lunch breaks. It’s great when you get awards, but what it comes down to is actually doing it, versus saying you’re doing it. At the end of the day, it’s important that we’re supporting our communities. It’s part of the credit union culture. It’s who we are,” added Burnell.

Earlier this year, Volinspire was chosen by Volunteer Ottawa as the official platform for the Canada 150 for 150 Volunteer Challenge, a nation-wide movement where volunteers are challenged to donate 150 hours to making a difference in their community.
