Landfill Blaze

Large crew deployed after trash ignites

Released by Jefff Ullyot, Assistant Fire Chief, City of Chilliwack FD

t approximately 3 a.m. on Sunday, the Chilliwack Fire Department responded to a landfill fire on the Skway (Sh-way) First Nations Reserve located on the outskirts of Chilliwack in the 9500 block of Skway Road.

Firefighters arrived to find a 75m x 75m area approximately 3 stories high of mixed material free burning.  Hand lines have been deployed and water tenders are being used to supply water to this un-hydranted area in an attempt to control the fire. The contractor of the site has provided an excavator to assist with digging through the debris. Approximately twenty members are on scene and will rotate throughout the day.

Residents of the community may be affected by smoke that is moving towards homes particularly to the eastern part of the community. Anyone affected by the dense smoke or smell form the fire is being asked to stay inside their homes and close their windows if necessary to avoid the potentially irritable conditions.

The fire could be burning for several hours until the Fire Department and the contractor can control the fire.

The cause of the fire is not considered to be suspicious.
