Townhouse Fire

Firefighters contain blaze to single unit

Released by Jeff Ullyot, Chwk Fire Dept.

he City of Chilliwack Fire Department responded to a report of a structure fire in a townhouse complex in the 5800 block of Sappers Way on Tuesday, July 31, 2012 at approximately 0145 hours.

Upon arrival of fire crews it was discovered that one of the units of a three story, four-unit complex of newly constructed townhouses was fully involved. Fire had traveled from the lower floor, breached the windows, and entered into the living area.    Firefighters were able to knock down the fire from the exterior, enter the townhouse, and limit the spread of the fire to adjoining units.

Damage to the one unit is extensive, with some smoke and water damage to the adjoining unit. Exterior damage from radiant heat is evident to an adjacent complex.

The occupants of the townhouse were not at home at the time of the fire. Occupants in the other attached units escaped without injury with most of the residents able to reoccupy their townhome later in the morning. There were no firefighter injuries.

The cause of the fire is undetermined at this time and is under investigation by the City of Chilliwack Fire Department and the RCMP.
