Vote For Chilliwack

Help make city Canada's "Ultimate Fishing Town"

ollowing the success of the online public vote which saw Chilliwack appear on the board of the first edition of Monopoly Canada, Tourism Chilliwack is pleased to announce that the city is in the running for another national competition, this time to become Canada’s ‘Ultimate Fishing Town’. Top prize is $25,000 and a 30 minute TV program to be made about the winning destination.

The World Fishing Network (WFN) is running an online public vote from August 17th until September 1st. Top scoring destinations will then be entered into a final round of voting which starts a week later. "Having made sure that Chilliwack was nominated to be in the running, our next priority is to see if we can get Chilliwack into the Top 10 and that final round of voting", said Brian Coombes, Executive Director of Tourism Chilliwack.

"Sport fishing is a significant contributor to BC’s economy, generating over $480 million in revenue spent on equipment, travel and accommodation and related supplies, according to a 2005 study by the Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC. Whether it’s our world famous pacific salmon runs, steelhead fishing on the Vedder River, fishing for trout in a crystal clear mountain lake or the opportunity to catch and release a mighty Fraser River sturgeon, we believe Chilliwack offers anglers who visit here repeatedly from all over the world, a unique and diverse fishing experience set amongst our spectacular scenery," said Coombes.

At the end of 2009, with the support of Tourism British Columbia and the Vancouver Coast and Mountains marketing organization, Tourism Chilliwack launched ‘Fish Chilliwack’, a sport fishing co-operative marketing program. This includes, a comprehensive sport fishing web portal for Chilliwack. Used to promote Chilliwack as the ultimate fishing destination, online and at tradeshows, the site has quickly become popular with anglers from all over the world, looking for fishing information and planning vacations in Chilliwack.

"Our area has a wide range of accommodation facilities including world-class fishing lodges, full service hotels and motels, catering especially for anglers, to cozy vacation rentals, cabins and bed and breakfasts, many within a stone’s throw of the Fraser and Chilliwack rivers. Combine this with a passionate and dedicated community of sport fishing charters and guides who work closely with organizations like the Fraser River Sturgeon Conservation Society and we believe we have what it takes to compete for one of six prizes on offer from WFN," said Robert Luer, Web Master for Tourism Chilliwack.
