Slowing Down For A Farm Cycle Tour

Chilliwack and Agassiz farms offer fresh food to riders  



harming country roads, easy pedaling, Fraser Valley farmers, and fresh local food—put them all together and you get the Slow Food Vancouver Summer Cycle Tours.


This year the fourth Agassiz cycle tour takes place on August 21 ; the second Chilliwack cycle tour on August 22.

The two leisurely self-guided tours, which run from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm, will provide cyclists with an educational and culinary experience, allowing them to explore a variety of Fraser Valley farms and agri-businesses, some only open to the public for this event.

Cyclists can come for one day or make it a fun-filled slow weekend. They will follow the scenic and relatively flat 25-km routes in both Agassiz and Chilliwack. Along the way they will taste locally grown food products and chat with farmers. They will catch a rare glimpse of a large commercial dairy farm and visit a variety of hobby, produce, and specialty farms.

Those who choose to stay in the valley overnight can

enjoy a traditional Chehalis salmon feast at the Charlie Long House on Saturday evening, and breakfast rustled up by the Preserved Seed at the Chilliwack registration area.

Blogger Erika Rathje writes about picturesque Limbert Mountain Farm in Agassiz, just one of the stops on the route, “We got a tour and brushed our hands against so many herbs and scented flowering plants (lemon verbena and geraniums, for example), my hand has never smelled so good! I bought delicious heirloom tomatoes there and a beautifully-shaped yellow squash.”

Debra Amrein-Boyes of Farm House Natural Cheeses has invited cyclists to her farm since the first cycle tour in 2007. “People have a wonderful day, really wonderful. They love to come out and see what we do, walk around and meet the animals, see the countryside, get a look into our lifestyle, and of course, have samples of good food.

Registration is $10 per ride, or $15 for both days. Kids under 12 take cycle free. Online registration is available at  

Tickets for the salmon feast can also be purchased through the Slow Food Vancouver website, $35 for adults and $25 for children under 12.

Net registration proceeds, along with donations to our Terra Madre fund will go toward sending delegates to Terra Madre 2010 in Torino, Italy. 

The Slow Food Movement is founded on the concept of eco-gastronomy, which recognizes the strong connections between plate and planet. Slow Food believes that consumers should be called co-producers, because by being informed about how food is produced and supporting those who produce it, they are a part of the production process.
