Jillian Armitt (L), 2014 Woman of the Year shares some smiles with Lucy Fraser, the Soroptimists choice this year. Below, Alisha Tushingham, primary winner of the Live Your Dream Award.

oroptimist International of Chilliwack is proud to announce that the winner of the 2015 Live Your Dream Award (formerly the Women’s Opportunity Award) has been chosen. The successful recipient is Alisha Tushingham.

The Live Your Dream Award program assists women who provide the primary source of financial support for their families by giving them the resources they need to improve their education, skills and employment prospects and create a better standard of living for themselves and their family. This year we are fortunate to honor Alisha with a $2,500 award and two women with a $1,000 award each.

The judges for this award felt that Alisha perfectly personified who the Live Your Dream Award is out there for. Congratulations Alisha!

Alisha’s career goal is to be an Aboriginal liaison officer for the Correctional Services of Canada, providing assistance in placing individuals back into their communities in a culturally appropriate manner.  Alisha has attended the University of the Fraser Valley since 2006.

While working fulltime Alisha attained her Social Service Diploma. After working in this field, Alisha found herself attracted to positions in the criminal justice field. As a Stó:lō woman, Alisha’s key goal is to have a career that involves working with First Nations Communities.

In 2011, Alisha took a year from her studies after her son was born before continuing her education.  Alisha is now in the Criminal Justice Degree Program at the University of the Fraser Valley and will complete her studies in December 2016.

A quote from one of Alisha’s references says: “Alisha is an honest, earnest, hardworking, hilarious woman who looks for opportunities for improvement in herself for the benefit of others and for the projects she is involved in.”

Sydney Torok is the 2015 Soroptimist Violet Richardson Award winner.

The awards Ceremony will be held on April 22, 2015. This year the location will be City of Chilliwack Council Chambers, 8550 Young Road. The event will begin at 6:30 pm with a welcome reception and the Presentation Ceremony will commence at 7:00 pm.  There is no charge for admission.

“Everyone is invited and encouraged to attend this Ceremony. We will be honouring the Soroptimist International of Chilliwack’s Live Your Dream Award winners and the Violet Richardson Award winner.” stated Afton Very, Chair of the Live Your Dream Award.
