Fire on the Mountain

Family displaced after blaze consumes home

Released by Ian Josephson, Asst. Chief

t 2:57 p.m., firefighters from Chilliwack fire halls 1, 2, 4 and 6 responded to a structure fire in the 8600 block of Sunrise Drive.

When firefighters arrived they discovered a fully involved 3-bay garage with the fire extending across the roof’s wood shakes and into the 2-storey house. Firefighters protected adjacent homes before they entered the structure and managed to confine and extinguish the fire.

There was extensive fire damage to the garage and roof with smoke and water damage to both floor areas.

There were no firefighter injuries.

Prior to the fire department’s response, the homeowner had arrived home to find smoke coming from the garage area. He tried to fight the fire but decided to get his 2 children out of the house and call 9-1-1.

Emergency Social Services (ESS) responded to the scene and provided accommodation for the homeowner and his family.

Cause of the fire is still under investigation but is considered accidental.
