arrested, police seek witnesses to hit and run

are looking for witnesses after a 37 year old Chilliwack man was struck and
killed by an alleged hit and run driver on April 15, 2012, shortly before
Darcy Garnot was walking with his girlfriend on the sidewalk east along
First Avenue near Nowell Street when a vehicle drove up and struck him from
behind. Darcy was transported by Emergency Health Services to the Chilliwack
General Hospital by where he later died as a result of his injuries.
The alleged driver and the suspect vehicle were located by police the very
next morning , April 16. He was subsequently arrested and his vehicle
Officers from the Lower Mainland District Integrated Collision Analysis and
Reconstruction Services examined the scene, assisting the Chilliwack RCMP
Traffic Section with the investigation. This investigation has been a
collaborative effort of resources from the Upper Fraser Valley Regional
Criminal Crash Investigative Team, Chilliwack RCMP General Duty, Chilliwack
RCMP Serious Crime Unit, and Lower Mainland District Forensic Services.
Sixty-year old Gary Allain, of Chilliwack, has been arrested and charged
with Criminal Negligence Causing Death, and Failure to Stop Causing Death.
His next court appearance is on May 8, 2012. The victim and suspect were not
known to each other.
"We were very pleased to have the suspect in custody so quickly after this
horrific incident," says Corporal Tammy Hollingsworth. "This is a tragic
loss of life and our thoughts are with Darcy's family and friends."
The police are still looking for witnesses from this tragic hit and run
