he Downtown Chilliwack Business Improvement Association (BIA) was honored in Nanaimo, BC, at the Business Improvement Areas of British Columbia (BIABC) Best in the West Awards luncheon, Tuesday April 3, as the winner in the communication category.

"Despite this difficult economy, our organization continues to develop innovative ways to improve the area, market our local businesses and communicate special events and new initiatives to the community," Chilliwack BIA Executive Director, Kathy Funk, said. "Our Board of Directors and staff are thrilled to be recognized for developing a program that builds member support and community involvement."

The Chilliwack BIA communication plan includes radio and newspaper advertising, television interviews, member newsletters, new business welcome packages, the GETMOR Downtown Reward card, and the Merchant Relations Committee. "Our member communication has been strengthened through extensive use of our website and social media in the past year," BIA office manager, Debbie Biggin, added. "Our office is able to share news, photos and videos quickly and effectively via our website, blog and many social media channels including Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube and Flickr," said BIA coordinator, Desmond Devnich.

The Chilliwack BIA were also finalists in the ‘Public and Private Spaces: Clean and Beautiful’ and ‘Marketing, Promotions, and Special Events’ categories at the 2012 Best in the West Awards. This isn’t the first time the Downtown Chilliwack BIA has been honoured by the BIABC. The team was recognized for Special Events in 2011 for Party in the Park and 1996 for Country Harvest Festival, and for Business and Economic Development in 2002.

BIA President Barb Kemp stated, "It takes teamwork to win such a prestigious award. Together the Marketing Committee and BIA staff has proven once again we are leading in the province."

BIABC provides networking opportunities, works on outreach, lobbies the government, assists with renewal efforts, and promotes members through relationships with partner organizations. The BIABC Best in the West Awards recognizes the excellence of leadership in member organizations that champion strong, vibrant and successful downtowns, main streets, and commercial districts throughout British Columbia.
