Cops Snuff Weaver Creek Blaze

Agassiz officers save forest

Released by Cst. Tracy Wolbeck, Chwk RCMP UFVRD/File photo

n August 25, 2012 at approximately 11:00 PM, Agassiz RCMP responded to a complaint of a growing forest fire at Weaver Lake Campground near Agassiz. The fire was able to be extinguished but the potential for destruction was significant.

The Agassiz RCMP with the Seasonal Policing unit evacuated the campground upon their arrival. The campground hosts first responded by containing the fire through use of their fire extinguishers and shovels. Police joined in on the effort to contain and extinguish the fire for approximately 30 minutes until Forest Firefighters arrived to the area with a water truck. The fire continued to re-ignite and was quickly covering the area.

"The quick thinking and action on the part of the campground hosts prevented the spread of what could have been a large forest fire," said Cst. Tracy Wolbeck. "We would like to thank the campground hosts as well as the campers at the campground for their cooperation with this incident."

Police are unsure what may have started the fire but speculate it could have been a propane tank left close to the fire. There were no injuries as a result of the fire.
