Trans Canada MVI could have been a lot worse

A truck driver watches as Chilliwack fire fighters de-energize the rig in a corn field off Highway 1 Tuesday.

hortly before 2 p.m. on Tuesday, the driver of a dump truck travelling west on the Trans Canada Highway lost control of it and went for a harrowing ride into an adjacent a corn field, to where it jack-knifed with the trailer it was pulling before coming to a stop.

The accident happened in the 46200-block of Industrial Way. City of Chilliwack fire fighters arrived on the scene within minutes and de-energized the truck so it wouldn't catch fire. The driver was out of the truck and appeared not to be injured. RCMP kept traffic moving and assessed the accident.

It's not known how the accident happened or if the driver was distracted or tired. But he can thank his lucky stars that it happened there and not east or west of that area where there's a moat separating the Highway 1 from the field.
