Cougars take home Western Canada baseball title
The Chilliwack Cougars line up
for a team photo with Mayor Sharon Gaetz (C) in City Hall council chambers
City Hall was paid a visit by the best Triple A 18U ball club in the west on
Tuesday – the Chilliwack Cougars.
Mayor Sharon Gaetz acknowledged that the team came from behind to win the
2014 Western Canadian Championships August 21-24 and City Hall wanted to
show their thanks to the team for putting the town on the baseball map and
let them bask in a little glory.
It was a moment to remember for General Manager Lee Rogers and Assistant
Coaches Terry Kellington and Raymond Johnston. Rogers had high praise for
City park staff for keeping the fields in top notch condition throughout the
season and into the playoffs.
According to a write-up on the BC Minor Baseball website, the team fell
behind the provincial champs Tri-City 6-0 in the first 2 innings, but
managed to claw their way back into the game and regained the lead in the
bottom of the 6th to win it. Tri-City beat Sakatchewan earlier in the day
for the chance to do battle with the Cougars.
"I am really pleased and honored to have you here," Gaetz told the team.
"It's just so inspiring and I know that Councillor Huttema came out and
threw the opening pitch for you, that probably made you win. I heard that
your team did an incredible job."
"Our community is proud to see young men who are dedicated to sport and
doing things that are healthy for your body, and your soul and your spirit.
You make our community ever so proud of you. We would have been proud of you
if you had not won the championship as well because we understand that
you're a team that has great sportsmanlike qualities and you have
disciplined yourself in this regard. I know that you would also tell me that
it's not all about the team. Its about your coaches and manager, your
parents and people that supported you."
Each player got a handshake from the mayor and was given a certificate of
appreciation before lining up in chambers for a team photo.
