Witnesses speak with police about the explosions heard Wednesday night.

series of five or six loud booms rattled residents at Mary St. and Spadina Ave. just after 9 p.m. Wednesday.

Police moved in quickly after initial reports described someone yelling that they'd been shot. A witness was heard excitedly telling police at the scene that he saw fireworks, not gunplay.

A local on a bicycle, told The Voice the sounds were audible quite a few blocks away.

"I heard them and I was on Hazel St.," he said.

Mounties determined a short time later that it was not gunshots.

It is just speculation, but the bangs sounded less like gunshots and more like mini-mortars, which are illegal.
