rivers who held off travelling the Trans Canada in hopes of avoiding the rush Monday evening were in for major disappointment.

Long weekend traffic was running smoothly Thanksgiving night, but it came to a grinding halt just after 10 PM when reports came in that a pedestrian had been struck by a vehicle on Highway 1 just west of the Herrling Island Exit 146.

The accident came in the middle of scripture-like monsoons in Chilliwack with 25-30mm of rain expected throughout the evening.

A total of 6 vehicles were involved and a semi tractor trailer jackknifed in the mishap.

Traffic was at a standstill and backed up for miles.

When Chilliwack first responders got there, they found several people with various injuries including a 3-year-old, two 4-year-olds and an elderly person.

Reports are that the calamity began when a car spun out of control. A person from inside the vehicle got out and was hit in the dark and driving rain. Paramedics managed to get that person away first to hospital.

The Voice provided updates to frustrated drivers who vented on Twitter while stuck and waiting in traffic.
