hat was a cute little enclave bubbling with toddlers is now a lifeless charred square of stinking wood chips. Emerald Park is tucked away in a much less-travelled part of Chilliwack. Just a quiet relaxing place to take the kids or walk the dog.

At around 3:30 am Saturday, The City of Chilliwack Fire Department received reports of a  playground structure fire at Emerald Park off Beverly Drive on Fairfield Island.

Hall 1 firefighters were dispatched and on arrival they found the niche park's centerpiece climbing structure fully ablaze and they quickly brought it under control.

City crews were out at daylight cleaning up the debris and repairing the landscape as much as possible. Police taped the playground off.

"Unfortunately the structure was seriously damaged due to the fire," said Mike Bourdon, Assistant Chief, Prevention. "This fire is believed to be deliberately set and is under investigation by Chilliwack Fire Department and RCMP."

"There were no civilian or firefighter injuries," added Bourdon.
