esidents of a home in the 46000-block scrambled for their lives after a fire broke out around 3:30 am.

Andrew Brown, Assistant Chief, Training, City of Chilliwack Fire Dept., said in a release Tuesday that two residents were able to escape through the front door just in time before flames and smoke made the exit impassable.

"The remaining occupants retreated back into the structure and exited through a first floor window.

Fire crews began an offensive attack on the blaze trying to save the home but ended up going into defensive mode in order to stop the fire from spreading to homes next door and behind.

The house is a write-off.

"The structure suffered major fire and smoke damage to the exterior and interior," said Brown, adding "there were no civilian or firefighter injuries,"

CFD suggests that working smoke alarms give people more time to escape a fire and that they should have an alternative escape plan.
